A huge number of individuals have experienced aching legs which can be very troublesome to deal with. These can occur when one least expects it and as such, it can often hit hard which can catch someone off guard as a result. Many often disregard their aching legs taking them lightly or for granted thinking a good night’s rest is more than enough to recuperate them. This however is not enough in some cases where their pains and discomfort just keeps getting worse. Let us look at some of the underlying factors that contribute in developing aching legs.
There are a number of aspects that revolves around what causes leg pain. For instance, pain in the legs can occur as a result of conditions that affect bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, nerves, or skin. Leg pain can occur in the foot, ankle, knee, behind the knee, thigh, down the back of the leg, or in any part of the leg. It can occur at night, while lying down, or while running or exercising, while cooking in your designer kitchen or standing up all day in a retail job, depending upon the cause. Also depending on the cause, leg pain can occur in one leg only, or in both legs.
Accidents and injuries are not the only ones that can cause your muscles to ache. It should be noted that while muscle aches and pains are commonplace, if it is happening to you often or for no apparent reason, there could be an underlying cause. Studies have implicated vitamin D deficiency in nonspecific musculoskeletal pain and suggest that supplementation decreases pain in some people, says Dr Deyo Famuboni, a London GP and Healthista blogger.
This common cause of muscle soreness however, can be easily relieved with dietary sources of both iron and vitamin D, such as nuts, beans, and spinach for iron and fish, eggs, and mushrooms for vitamin D.
Achy or heavy legs could be also be a sign for leaking veins. A simple varicose vein could be related to the leaking veins known as venous insufficiency. A thing to note here is that the valves do not close properly close with this condition. This allows blood to flow backward down the legs, or reflux, and pool in the veins, leading to complications, such as swollen, achy legs or leg cramping; varicose veins and skin changes that can lead to bleeding veins and leg ulcers.
There have been a number of cases in which a simple leg pain resulted to a far more serious concern. For instance, this little boy who was left paralysed within hours after waking up with aching legs. Alex Chastonwas was diagnosed with the rare illness, transverse myelitis, where the immune system attacks healthy tissue. Another good example is with this young woman who thought her aching legs were caused by too much dancing in her high heels was shocked to discover she had leukaemia. Ashton Howard, 28, had been enjoying herself on holidays to Croatia and Ibiza with her friends when she started feeling unwell. She was devastated to learn she had acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, a cancer of the white blood cells.
Leg discomforts should never be ignored unless the cause is something obvious, like a fall, pinpointing the source may require some medical detective work. Trying to tough it out, though, will not get you any closer to the answers.
